MCP loader (altweb-context)

altweb-context loads ALTWEB capsules into AI agents with verification before injection: content is returned only when the capsule is signed, the signature verifies, and the signer’s full public key is in your local trust file. Everything else is refused with an explicit reason — and refusal is the default: an empty trust file rejects every capsule, signed or not.

The context that steers an agent — instructions, personas, skills, memory — is usually plain markdown with no provenance, so anything that can write it can poison it. A capsule is markdown compiled into a self-contained artifact with an ECDSA P-256 signature. This server is the gatekeeper: it refuses at load time, before any content reaches the model, so your agent loads only context signed by keys you trust.

source accepts: a .altweb.html file path, a raw .altweb hash file, a URL with #hash, a URL to a hosted standalone capsule, or the hash string itself.

load_capsule is strict by design. Each refusal names its reason:

Refusal Condition
REFUSED (UNSIGNED) The capsule carries no signature — only signed capsules can be loaded
REFUSED (PASSWORD_REQUIRED) The capsule is encrypted and no password was passed
REFUSED (INVALID_SIGNATURE) Signature verification failed — the content may be tampered
REFUSED (UNTRUSTED_KEY) The signature is valid, but the signer’s public key is not in the trust file; the refusal message includes the exact JSON entry (with the full public key) to add if you decide to trust it

On success, the returned text is a verified provenance header followed by the capsule markdown fenced between markers that embed a random per-load nonce:

The fence is what makes the provenance unforgeable from inside the capsule: the nonce is drawn fresh on every load, so content cannot fabricate a closing marker and imitate the header. Anything provenance-shaped that appears between the markers — including an authored By ... byline — is content, not verification.

Use verify_capsule when you want the report without the content: it returns JSON with signed, verified, trusted, encrypted, the fingerprint, the signer name, and the trust file path. For a signed encrypted capsule the signature covers the decrypted payload, so verified stays null until the password is supplied.

Fingerprints are printed by altweb keygen and altweb verify. The trust file is your policy — keep it short, and add keys deliberately.

  • A valid signature proves who authored the capsule and that the bytes are intact — it does not make the content safe. Trust decisions stay with you: the trust file is the policy.
  • Encrypted capsules need the password argument; the signature covers the decrypted payload, so verification happens after decryption.
